Surviving the Pandemic

A postcard from the future: life in Denmark after the lockdown. As the restrictions lift and we emerge blinking from our homes, it’s possible to believe that life will be good again

This article was suggested to me by fellow history nerd, Max. It’s a really in-depth read, but rings true to the quote I’ve been seeing circulating on Instagram “If you ever wondered what you would do during Holocaust or Civil Rights Movement, now is the time to act.”

Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old Black EMT from Louisville, was shot and killed by police in her home on March 13th. That night three members of the Louisville Metro Police department burst into Taylor’s apartment using a “no-knock” warrant at 12:40 AM as part of a drug investigation into another person. Breonna’s family has stated in a lawsuit that police had already apprehended their suspect elsewhere. Upon hearing intruders in the house, Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, fired his legal firearm one time. Police then returned fire and shot Taylor eight times. She died on her hallway floor.

“Hold My Earrings” is a statement I’ve said way to many of times growing up. It has become a metaphorical phrase and signal by women of color that they’re preparing for a struggle. It is evident in today’s society, women of color, particularly black women are facing perhaps the biggest struggle of their lives. COVID-19 has specifically compromised the lives of African American communities in disproportionate rates. Centuries of racism and layers of oppression faced daily is truly painful to confront. However, reframing the conversation and flipping the struggle on its head is the type of superpower, in circles labeled “Black Girl Magic” that enables black women to view whole systems for what they are – while envisioning and creating deep, transformative change for themselves, families, communities and future generations. In this article you will meet 13 BIPOC Women on the frontlines of transformative change and the impacts they making during this pandemic and beyond.

The other shoe has finally dropped on my continued chicken collusion updates – four industry executives have been indicted. This comes after the DoJ opened a case in June 2019 looking into a 5-year run of fixed prices and rigged bids spanning 2012-2017. Current Pilgrim’s Pride CEO and a former VP along with current President and a VP at Claxton Poultry Farms have been charged. They are the first in a massive ongoing criminal antitrust probe of the $65 billion U.S. chicken industry with other producers like Tyson Foods, Sanderson Farms and Perdue Farms still under investigation.
